About Us

“I Believe.”

Each week, First Presbyterian Church gathers as we have since 1823 to worship and serve the God who redeemed us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, His Son. Our worship always includes the Apostle’s Creed, the statement of faith of the saints for generations.

I BELIEVE in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

We don’t say the Creed out of habit or as a ritual; we say the Creed because we believe. We believe that God created everything, including humanity. We believe He created us for relationship with Him.

However, our sins separated us from God. In love, God sent Jesus, His Son, to live among humanity and proclaim a better way to live. We believe Jesus died as the perfect sacrifice for our sins, and we believe that His resurrection guarantees everyone who believes in Him will receive eternal life. We believe that Jesus serves as our advocate with the Father and that He lovingly reconciles us to the Father against Whom we sinned.

We believe Jesus will come again, and that His coming will bring perfect justice. Everyone will face judgment, but those who have confessed Jesus as Lord and believed in His resurrection will receive grace rather than sentencing at the throne of judgment.

Lastly, we believe Jesus sent the Holy Spirit into the world to join all believers in one holy catholic Church, regardless of denomination, race, ethnicity, or language. We believe this one Church encompasses both those who died in faith and those who will replace the living as the witnesses to Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. We believe Jesus will raise everyone. Those who believe in Him will live in a new creation, one unmarred by sin. We believe we will live forever in this perfect creation.

We believe the call to belief is a call to service. We encourage you to join us as we minister to the Greensboro community, proclaiming Jesus in our worship and our lives.
